A Guitar Burpee is a comprehensive fretboard workout that ties together chords, arpeggios, pentatonics, scales, and more — all in one key, one quality, one position. Just like a physical burpee works your whole body in one movement, a Guitar Burpee works your whole musical vocabulary in one exercise.
Each burpee is 10 steps, randomly assigned a root note and chord quality. The steps guide you through open triads, pentatonic patterns, scale shapes, CAGED chord voicings, arpeggios, and colorful extensions — all connected to the same harmonic center.
Why Guitar Burpees?
Most guitarists think of rhythm guitar and lead guitar as separate skills. Chords live in one mental box, scales in another, arpeggios in another. This separation slows you down when performing — you're constantly switching gears instead of flowing naturally between textures.
Guitar Burpees unify these elements. By practicing chords, pentatonics, arpeggios, and scales all anchored to the same root and quality, your brain starts connecting them as one integrated system. The result: faster recall, smoother transitions between rhythm and lead, and a deeper intuitive understanding of the fretboard.
How to Use
1. Choose your qualities — Select which chord qualities you want to practice (Major, Minor, Diminished, etc.) on the home screen.
2. Roll — Hit the dice button. You'll get a random root note and quality.
3. Work through 10 steps — Tap each step to expand it. Practice the pattern shown, then check it off and move on. The steps progress from simple (triads) through pentatonics and scales to more advanced voicings.
4. Use the toggles — Many steps have options you can explore:
• Scale toggles let you switch between related modes (e.g., Ionian → Lydian)
• Pentatonic base selectors let you switch between minor and major pentatonic bases
• Full Neck / Positions toggles let you see the complete fretboard or individual position shapes
• Left/Right hand buttons mirror the fretboard for left-handed players
5. Roll again — When you've completed all 10 steps, roll a new burpee. Repetition across different keys builds fluency.
About Position Playing
The scale and pentatonic position shapes in this app follow the principles of position playing — anchoring your fretting hand in one spot and playing all reachable notes without shifting.
Your four fingers sit on four consecutive frets — that's your comfort zone. Your index finger can stretch back one fret, and your pinky can stretch forward one fret. Every note in a position shape falls within this reach.
Why does this matter? Consistent repetition in the most efficient fingering leads to muscle-pattern memory faster. This helps when playing by ear and when reading music — your eyes can stay on the sheet music or the conductor instead of on your hands. When your hand intuitively knows the notes and sounds in each position, your conscious mind is free to focus on musicianship: dynamics, phrasing, expression, and listening to the ensemble.
